In Isaiah 7, the prophet and his son
were sent with a message to King Ahaz, who was facing the combined armies of
two neighboring enemies. God's counsel was to "take heed and be quiet," to
be unafraid despite the crisis, for the battle was the Lord's. God intended
to give Ahaz the resources necessary to overcome his challenges.
That's a message for us, too. We don't have to be fearful, for God gives us
the grace and ability for whatever He calls us to do. We need to be strong
and courageous, not fearful and doubtful. We need to have quiet minds and
confident souls.
John Ruskin wrote, "God is a kind Father. He sets us all in the places where
He wishes us to be employed; and that employment is truly our Father's
business. He chooses work for every creature . . . . He gives us always
strength enough and sense enough for what He wants us to do."
We can do whatever He calls us to do through Christ who strengthens us.
The same God who guides the stars in their courses, who directs the earth in
its orbit, who feeds the burning furnace of the sun, and keeps the stars
perpetually burning with their fires—the same God has promised to supply thy
strength.
