After God made his promise to Abraham,
Abraham waited patiently for its fulfillment. Abraham's willingness to wait
revealed the importance of the promise. In our own lives, we realize the
necessity to wait for what is important to us.
For that reason, we wait for God. The waiting says that God is important to
us, that we could not do without him. Perhaps God allows us to wait in order
to increase our desire for his presence, to deepen our awareness of his
importance. In any case, we learn through waiting that we cannot manipulate
God. We do not control our relationship with God. God is in control. Waiting
teaches us to let go and simply to be attentive. In our expectant
attentiveness, we discover our poverty which enables us to be filled with
the presence of God.
Lord, sometimes you seem so far away. If I can find nothing in myself that
causes the distance, I will simply wait expectantly for the moment when you
come to reassure me of your presence. I will wait for you, because you are
the meaning of my life.
